A Moana-Inspired Tropical Luau
Once I start planning a party, I tend to get a little tunnel vision—I love choosing a theme and carrying it through every last detail. The only problem? Kids have a habit of changing their minds!
That was exactly the case with this party. At the beginning of the summer, my daughter was absolutely obsessed with Moana. Then, about a month before her birthday, she had already moved on to her next favorite thing. (Such is life with a three-year-old!)
Cue the panic.
Fortunately, there was an easy solution. Instead of scrapping months of planning, we transformed the celebration into a vibrant tropical luau—with just a touch of Moana magic.
The Cake
My favorite scene in Moana has always been the moment Moana walks toward the ocean as a toddler. There is something so magical about the way the ocean parts and the waves welcome her. I knew I wanted to recreate that feeling in cake form.
I started by handcrafting individual fish and coral to create the underwater scene. At the center of Te Fiti’s island, her heart glows, while to the left stands the cairn at the top of the mountain where Moana's ancestors placed stones to mark each new chief. Nestled at the base of the isomalt waterfall is one of her village's voyaging canoes.
Tamatoa the crab sits on his perch, covered in golden seashells and jewels, hiding Maui’s hook behind him.
The tropical theme continued inside the cake as well, with layers of pineapple cake and toasted coconut buttercream—flavors that felt perfectly at home on the islands.
The Invitation
It always begins with the invitation. Sometimes I keep it simple, and sometimes I'm feeling extra crafty. This was definitely one of those times! I designed the invitation inserts, then put my Cricut to work creating the tropical gatefold sleeve. I wanted guests to feel like they were opening the gates to a tropical paradise before they ever arrived at the party.
The Details
I love setting the vibe of a party before guests even enter. I lined our walkway with 18 tiki torches to create a beautiful and special entry.
I covered a “3” in moss and plumeria, and decorated a wooden surf board as a fun welcome sign.
Did you know you can have fresh floral leis shipped overnight directly from Hawaii? I can't tell you how excited I was when I found when I found a company that shipped them overnight fresh straight from the islands. Were they necessary? Absolutely not. They were the perfect touch, greeting each guest with a heartfelt "Aloha" as they stepped inside.
Every guest found a pineapple macaron waiting at their place setting. My talented friend, Mandy Brown, made these adorable little treats, and they doubled as both dessert and part of the table décor. I loved how they tied the tropical theme together before anyone even sat down to eat.
I hand-calligraphed wax leaves to use as place cards, adding one final tropical touch to each table setting.
I extended our party decor to the outside deck with a pineapple tree centerpiece and beautiful place settings. I ordered handwoven Iraca palm plate chargers and napkin rings to make each setting special and unique.
The Food
One of my favorite parts of planning a party is incorporating the theme into the menu. For this celebration, I planned a Polynesian-inspired buffet while still giving a wink to Moana. I served everything on natural wood trays and tropical leaf serving bowls to continue the island theme.
The buffet included Tamatoa's Fish Dinner (shrimp salad sandwiches), Te Kā Lava Rocks (pineapple chicken), Pua the Pig Kahlua Pork Crostini, Maui's Crab Leg Salad (seafood pasta salad), Boat Snacks (candies and chocolate-covered Macadamia nuts), and Te Fiti Island Fruit—a watermelon carved into a tiki statue that became a fun centerpiece of the buffet.
For dessert, guests enjoyed coconut macaroons and decorated monogram cookies featuring Eliane's initial.
At the end of the day, my favorite part wasn't the cake, the leis, or even the tropical details. It was watching Eliane play barefoot and celebrate turning three. Those are the moments that make every late night and every handmade detail worth it.
